About Tony Bourke
This site serves as my professional presence on the Interweb. I needed a central repository for all my professional works, including my freelance writing and sys admin resources (such as the lb-l mailing list).
I've worked in the technology sector for 12 years. I started out working help desks for college computer labs and dial-up tech support for ISPs in Indiana and Virginia. I've worked Unix administration and network administration, from setting up dial-up ISPs to server farms to working presales. I've worked primarily in the hosting and datacenter business, but I've recently started to work in the software field.
I live in NYC in an East Village apartment that most would consider small, but is perfectly fine for those familiar with New York City.
I'm vegan, which is a strict form of vegetarianism. Vegans do not consume meat (including fish and other seafood), milk, cheese, eggs, or anything that came from animal or animal sources. I also do not wear wool or leather. As you can imagine, I'm a pain in the ass to go out to eat with. Actually, it's not that bad.
I'm a vegan for many reasons, and those reasons could easily fill up several pages. To put it succinctly, I'm vegan for reasons of health, ethics, and the environment. I've been vegan for over 10 years, and meat-free in general for about 14 years.
I enjoy running and art when I'm not being a total geek. I ran the 2002 NYC Marathon, as well as a handful of other organized races, such as the Philly Distance Run (half-marathon, 13.1 miles). I plan on running the Dublin Marathon in 2006, and the Great Wall of China Wall Marathon in 2007.
