There is another fix in 23.0.4.0:

Q01506516
2208 and 2216 Switches can panic if the network processors (SP1 and SP2) try to send a letter to a non-existent SP (SP3 or SP4). It is strongly recommended that all customers with 2208/2216 switches using code version 23.0 upgrade to 23.0.4.0 immediately.

Thanks. It is interesting that Nortel would say so. I am saying it because I am at the release recommended in the release notes:

Switch is up 0 days, 0 hours, 13 minutes and 44 seconds.

I would suggest to upgrade to AlteonOS 23.0.3.4 - you have mentioned that the unit became stable as soon as you have removed the proxy IP. There is a known problem with the 2208 and the 2216 in case proxy IPs are used. Out of the 23.0.3.4 release notes:

  Q01389286
PANIC: 2208/2216 switches may panic when Proxy IP address are being used and the switch receives an ICMP echo request sent to the Proxy IP address. This panic affects ONLY 2208 and 2216 switch types. It is strongly recommended that all customers with 2208/2216 switches using code version 23.0 upgrade to 23.0.3.4 immediately.

The reason for the apparent flapping had been discovered: the Alteon (model 2208) was crashing and rebooting every hour or so, if Proxy IP was configured. When the PIP was removed from the configuration, it stopped crashing…

It looks SFP is not fully compatible with the switch.

why don't you try to change SFP ?

This Alteon is connected to a Nortel 8600 switch. Every couple of hours the following messages are displayed in the Alteon's log. I am not sure what "SFP detection" means, thus cannot think of a reason for the ports changing up/down states.

May this be related to a spanning tree topology change at the 8600?

It is worth noting that Alteon P ort9 is configured on STG1, not STG3, and is attached to a 8600 port belonging to STG1.

Alteon's port10 is indeed configured on STG3 at the Alteon, because it belongs to a different VLAN than Port9, and the Alteon made me allocate it to a distinct STG. However, the STG of the 8600 port attaching Port10 could not be changed because of existing VLAN configuration; i.e. it remained at the original STG1).

    Thanks, Eli
